OUR LABELS
Discover the world of Bryceland's through our various labels. Each with its own direction and character to play its own role within your wardrobe.
The COWBOY LABEL
The heritage and story around the American West has given rise to a genre of “workwear” so unique that it is a universe unto itself. Born out of necessity for durability, comfort and protection, the classic cowboy’s wardrobe was a coveted collection, accrued a piece at a time, worn hard and maintained like the tool it was. But from within this world of practical function came some of the least austere and most beautifully fancy garments.
From scalloped yokes to smile pockets, multi-hued chainstitch embroidery and fancy silver buckles. It is perhaps the dandiest incarnation of workwear, and so falls side by side with a tailored wardrobe easily. This spirit of play and beauty as part of a wardrobe of robust workingman’s gear is what inspires us to recreate classic garments of the American west - clothes that start out in elegance and evolve with wear to become working tools for life.
The Black Bean Label
The garments provided for enlisted men from WWI onwards is like a timeline of clothing design and production, chronicling the shift from small, tailored garment production to mass production, and the subtle variations in that world are as fascinating as they are diverse.
The echoes of traditional tailoring that shows itself in construction methods speaks to the patterners cutting these first garments - tailors and pattern makers who may have spent their lives cutting frock jackets and great coats, only to be called on to make comfortable, durable uniforms to kill and die in. To our eye, there is a shadow to this evolution in the hunting wear of the American North East - hardy and durable garments meant to balance style with functionality.
The echoes of tailoring remain in many early examples, such as a buffalo check plus four trouser that, in a thornproof or tweed would be just as appropriate shooting game on an English estate. It is this marriage of functionality and elegance that makes these two genres so inspiring to us.
A focus on function for endeavours that may often be life or death, but with an eye to the elegant, proportions classical and cloths usurped from the world of high tailoring and made available to all.
THE BRYCE-ALLS LABEL
The uniforms of the working class have been coveted, usurped, made into statements of political and social opposition. They have been elevated to formality and reduced to prison uniform, but as a rule have been worn, worn out, repaired and inherited so their place in the costume of our era is assured. Be they French or English, American or Japanese, they have become uniforms in both the sense that they are made for work, and that they are often codified to different trades and guilds.
Some of our favourite vintage pieces come from the world of workwear - felt denim chore coats, boiler suits, low back bib and brace overalls. They are pieces made for utility and function, with detailing specific to the trades they covered. Our goal is to pay respect to these classic garments, and create uniforms of work and play, garments that take every blow and age gracefully all the while.
THE BASEBALL LABEL
Before the world got technical and we covered ourselves in man made fibres, cotton jerseys, wool meltons and canvas cloth was the height of technical innovation. Those garments still live and are worn by successive owners, interpreted in new ways, and become more beautiful with age.
Vintage sweats and band tees, loop wheeled with esoteric variations of comb and flat rib continue to be loved for their idiosyncrasies - not something that can be claimed by newer, more synthetic evolutions of the garment. These idiosyncrasies are what we strive to keep current, details that set them apart. Short bodied sweat shirts made to not bind at the hip, with narrowed sleeves to hug the forearm and keep the hands free to catch a ball or swing a bat. There is a joyful pragmatism in it, garments made for the happiest of exertions. Our baseball label is for the activities of our life.
THE BLACK HK LABEL
We are proudly a company born in Hong Kong, and closely linked to the heritage of Sino-British tailoring. Long known by those in the know, tailors in Hong Kong have known political leaders, Hollywood actors and captains of industry as customers for over a century.
From classical European suiting, to reimagined variations on Chinese traditional dress, our Hong Kong Tailoring Co. label works with some of the last of the great Cantonese “xifu” - the masters of their trades. Bespoke suiting, mandarin jackets and frogged front shirts, high waisted trousers and lounge like evening wear - we imagine a world go old Hong Kong, wear elegance rubs shoulders with elegance and a world of bespoke is available to every client.
THE BRYCE DOWN LABEL
Stepping out the back door into the wild unknown, we imagine an era of exploration that promised adventure and discovery. A world that inspires us to dress for the elements, with technical advances to make the inherently dangerous a modicum more safe.
BryceDown started as a label to produce down jackets and vests in the iconic 60/40 cloth - a cotton and nylon blend developed by John Murphy of Sierra Designs in the 60’s. We have gone on to develop pieces for adventures in our own climes, such as the 60/40 foul weather anorak intended to keep us dry through the Japanese rainy season.
Our colour palette of bold primary and safety colours, with iconic patterns from the history of technical gear - Bryce Down is our call to adventure.
THE EMMELINE LABEL
Playing around with proportions to accentuate female figures, we aim to create timeless pieces for women at every occasion. Embracing the enduring allure of the past while making a statement in the presence with a perfect pair of jeans that hug you in all the right places, a tailored blazer that elevates your look, or a rugged jumpsuit that commands attention.
We are dedicated to women who have a deep-rooted love for heritage clothing, an appreciation for quality craftsmanship, and an eye for the refined tailoring with classic silhouettes.
THE TAILORS LABEL
The etiquette of the classic mens wardrobe was largely a spoken history, passed down from father to son, tailor to client. Understanding the importance of what to wear and when was a largely unwritten knowledge. As style became fashion, fathers stopped teaching their sons and rather the younger generation had to interpret the trends for their elders.
Bryceland’s began as a custom tailoring store in Jingumae, Tokyo, and our love of the classic tailored world continues through the changing zeitgeist. Working with the best traditional makers around the world, our Tailors label seeks to work with makers that continue a tradition of craftsmanship in their fields. Knitwear in Shetland and Geelong wools from the North of Scotland to Ties hand made in Florence, Italy - respecting the traditional ways and creating garments of value.
