Boot Cuts are both functional and stylised, masculine with an edge of feminine appeal, elegant but also overt. The origin of the flared leg have multiple explanations, the most established being that the legs of sailors trousers were cut with the distinctive flare to allow them to be easily rolled when swabbing the deck, a function that allows the characteristic flare to fit comfortably over boots, making them popular amongst devotees of western boots and the stacked platform heels of 60’s hippies and 70’s disco-ites.
The controversy around the flared blue jean may have something to do with how polarising the most iconic wearers of the style have been. The Levi’s 646 bell bottom and 517 flare competed with the more laconically cowboy styles from Lee at a time when these models would be worn eye waveringly tight by both sexes, patched and embroidered, worn long and frayed over Keds or Converse, or in the case of Robert Plant during the height of Led Zeppelin’s influence on the cultural zeitgeist, worn so tight as to allow everyone to ascertain his religion.
For us it is nostalgic in all the right ways, and perfectly masculine in how elegantly sexy they can be. Modelled after a 70’s western jean, with wide stance teardrop pockets to allow comfort in the saddle - be that equine or motorised. Made in Okayama from a brighter, bluer left hand twill denim and our black “cash” cotton twill sateen, with solid brass zips and buttons to pay homage to the style that inspires us. Cut high and square through the hip box, the seat is shallow to sit close with a slimmer thigh and moderate flare from the knee. It’s a style we recommend wearing tight and long, be it over western boots, canvas sneakers of the glammest of platforms. A style that is distinctly rock and roll, but versatile enough to be all elegance when worn with confidence.
